Where to Go in Ozamiz City: Cotta Fort

Cotta Fort was built in 1756 by Father Jose Ducos as a Spanish outpost in the area. Located along the shores of Panguil Bay in Ozamiz City, the stone fort is rectangular in shape typical to many Spanish fortresses built during the time. It has four bulwarks named as San Ignacio, San Fernando, San Jose and Santiago.

The west gate is the main gate entrance facing the city of Ozamiz which has an image of Apostle St. James (Santiago), Patron Saint of Spain. Below the image is the year 1756, the inception of the construction of the fort.

It is also called Fuerte de la Concepcion y del Triunfo where a chapel was built inside the walls of the fort and an image of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception in the pink and blue attire was enshrined. It is located outside the fort on the wall facing the bay. It is believed to be miraculously growing and has been the object of pilgrimage of the locals and tourists visiting the city.

As one of the four Spanish fortresses built during Spain's occupation in the Philippines, Cotta Fort is one of the must-see places when visiting Ozamiz City.
