Bato Church
Bato, Catanduanes is a quaint town located on the southwest part of the island. It is most well-known for its lovely, century old church built on a small hill facing Bato River and greets everyone upon entering the town.
According to some sources, the church took about 53 years and six different parish administrations (from 1830 to 1883) to build.
Church's interiors
The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It is more commonly known as Bato Church, which has thick and massive walls made of mortar and coral lime stones designed to withstand the strong typhoons visiting the province every year. The church had retained its old colonial look despite the natural calamities that struck the province in the past.
Bato Church is one interesting landmarks that shouldn't to be missed when visiting the island province of Catanduanes.
How to Get to Bato, Catanduanes
By Air: Catanduanes in Bicol region is an island province located in the easternmost fringe of Luzon. Cebu Pacific Air and Sky Jet Airlines offer direct flights from Manila to Virac, the capital of Catanduanes several times weekly. Travel time is about an hour from Manila to Virac.By Land and Sea: From Manila, take a bus bound for Legaspi City which takes about 10-12 hours. From there, take a jeepeney to Tabaco City port and take a RORO to Virac. Ferry leaves at 6:30 AM in Tobaco City and 1:00 PM from Virac daily. Fare is about Php 220.00 per person.
Upon reaching Virac, you may take a tricycle or jeepney going to Bato. Travel time is about 15-20 minutes.
