Skyscanner Study Reveals Top Travel Trends for 2013

According to the annual Travel Trends report of Skyscanner, the world’s fastest growing global travel search site, Asian countries are still popular travel destinations, with Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan making it to the top five outbound summer destinations for 2013.

The Travel Trends list based on actual flight searches conducted on the travel website and its mobile apps this year revealed that the top ten outbound destinations visited by Filipinos in 2013 were Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Canada. The following key cities in the Philippines also received quite a number of domestic tourists: Manila, Cebu, Kalibo, Puerto Princesa, Davao.

"The trends we saw this 2013 prove that Filipinos are becoming more reasonable yet adventurous travelers," says Janet Ranola, Skyscanner Philippines Manager. "The popularity of travel search engines such as Skyscanner makes flight search easier, possible, pocket-friendly, and convenient with just a click of a button."

While Manila is still the most popular Philippine destination, provinces known for its pristine beaches make it to the top ten local destinations.

It isn’t that surprising that Kalibo and Caticlan make it to the list as its local government announced a 1.5 million tourist target this year, following the 1.2 million registered last year. Other popular provinces, Cebu and Puerto Princesa, Palawan, which have been attracting quite a few travellers over the past few years, receive top marks by making it to the top five destinations.

Looking into the New Year, Asian destinations still remain to be the most favored with Singapore taking the top spot as the leading outbound destination for Holy Week 2014. Joining that list are already popular destinations Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand. But Filipinos are venturing to other parts of the region with Malaysia, South Korea and Indonesia making it to the top 10. Due to the recent announcement of national flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, it comes as no surprise that the United Kingdom makes it to the list as the third long haul flight option after the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

"The results of our study show that traveling is already part of the Filipino lifestyle," adds Ranola. "In 2014, we are expecting an increase in the number of Filipinos booking and searching for top destinations and must-see places around the world."

What are the tricks Filipinos do to avoid jetlag?

According to a recent survey by Skyscanner, a leading global travel search site, 54% of Filipinos have flown with long distance transmerdian flights. This often results to desynchronisis or what is commonly known as jet lag, which results to poor sleep upon arrival, poorer mental performance and increased fatigue.

“In an ideal world, to prevent jetlag we should begin taking on the habits of destination time zone before we leave home,” says Tony Gherardin of National Medical Adviser at the Travel Doctor – TMC. “That is, eating at the same time and sleeping or resting at the same time as what you would be doing at that destination. Of course this isn’t always possible at home or even while flying.”

From changing their body clock to adjusting their alcohol consumption, Filipinos have tried various means to combat effects of jet lag. Skyscanner has identified practices that Filipinos use before or after they take long haul flights.

Most Filipinos rely on their health when it comes to jetlag. In a survey conducted with 1000 respondents, majority of Filipinos (45.8%) choose to eat a light diet of healthy fresh food. Other health conscious activities include exercising and stretching on the plane (44.7%) or get as much exercise and fresh air on the day of travel as they can (27.6%).

Others adjust their sleeping habits, which include those who change their time to destination time when they board the plane and sleeping according to this time zone (35.3%) and those who try to stay awake all flight and sleep only when I arrive at my destination (24.5%).

Some Filipinos adjust their alcohol consumption. There are those who drink alcohol to fall asleep on the flight to wake up refreshed (12.5%), while others go the other way and avoid alcohol 24 hours before the flight until landed (25.4%).

Some Filipinos use the help of medicine and take sleeping tablets (14.5%) or anti-jet lag pills (8.5%), herbal remedies (8.3%) or melatonin (4%). Others even go as far as taking Viagra (0.7%) just to avoid jetlag.

“While most Filipinos take only a day to recover from jetlag,” says Janet Ranola, Philippines Marketing Manager of leading travel search site, Skyscanner. “It takes two to five days for some, which is probably why there are those who try various methods to avoid it.”

This is a Press Release.

Health and Wellness: Reflexology Massage in Surigao City Park

Want to ease out those tired and aching muscles after a long day of visiting Surigao City's tourist spots and attractions? Head to Surigao City Park for a relaxing massage.

Reflexology is mainly focused on applying pressure to "reflex" points on the feet or hands which correspond to organs, glands, and other parts of the body. It may feel painful while it is done but it will surely give you very a relaxing feel afterwards.

No need to go to a spa! In Surigao City, there are reflexologists stationed at the city park which provides a relaxing reflexology service. There are no fixed amount for the massage, you just have to give them any amount you think is commensurate to the service provided. If you don't have oil and towel, you could have it from them for an extra cost. A foot reflexology session would last for about 30-45 minutes.

It's better than a spa-like experience! The therapists are well-trained and go beyond an extra mile of providing excellent service to their clients. You'll certainly feel calm, relaxed and rejuvenated after the massage.
